4 Personal Branding Myths Keeping You Stuck (and How to Get Unstuck!)

We’ve all been guilty of holding onto false beliefs about what we should or shouldn’t do to build our personal brands. It’s easy to follow our feelings on certain topics, but sometimes it’s better to get insight from people with real experience and a proven track record.

Earlier this spring, I went live on Instagram with Cherene Francis, founder of The Personal Brand Boss. Cherene is an award-winning entrepreneur, marketing consultant, certified image consultant, creative director, producer, and actor—a passionate multihyphenate who knows what it takes to build your brand.

We talked about 4 major myths that keep entrepreneurs stuck—and how to shift your thinking:

Myth #1: “I don’t want to be on social media. I want to be taken seriously.”

We’re in a time where people connect with authenticity.

The era of the perfectly curated image is over. People are no longer looking for perfection—they want to connect with real, relatable people.

Being real on social doesn’t hurt your professionalism. In fact, the more authentic you are, the more professionally you’re perceived. Why? Because people trust you. They see you’re not putting on a show.

Myth #2: “I only want to focus on LinkedIn. Nowhere else.”

It’s great to have a main platform, but you still need to be visible in other places—even if it’s not with the same intensity.

Not everyone is on LinkedIn. If people can’t find you anywhere else, you lose opportunities.

At a minimum, secure your profile on other platforms. It helps build your authority and lets people know you’re serious about your presence.

Myth #3: “I don’t need to show my face. It’s more about the brand than me or what I look like.”

People connect with people. If you want to grow faster, you need to incorporate yourself into your brand. People shouldn’t have to dig through your website to find you.

Let them see who’s behind the business. That face-to-face (even if virtual) connection builds trust and speeds up your growth.

Myth #4: “I’m here to sell and make money, so I don’t want to pretend on social media.”

The sales mindset is powerful—it’s like being a hunter. You’re focused, and that’s a good thing. But you also need the mindset of a farmer—someone who plants and nurtures for long-term growth.

Social media is an investment. It’s about planting seeds that will bear fruit in the right season. You can hunt and farm at the same time—share your offer and share your story. That’s how you build a long-lasting brand.
